WESTMINSTER’S Scottish National Party (SNP) leader has slammed proposals by the UK Government for football away fans as “unmanageable” and “unworkable”.

Stephen Flynn, Leader of the SNP in the House of Commons, hit out at the controversial new proposals for Scottish football fans following an open consultation published by the government.

The plans have since been met by backlash and concerns from fans, as well as the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) and the Scottish Football Association (SFA).

Flynn, 34, is the latest to criticise the proposals, which have previously been branded “draconian” and “an attack on civil liberties”.

Steven Flynn, MP for Aberdeen South and Westminster Leader of Scottish National Party (SNP)

The proposals, which appear to only apply to football and no other sports or large-scale events, include imposing limits on how many fans buses can carry and restricting where they can stop.

The proposals suggest that anyone running a bus would have to inform a “dedicated football officer” (DFO) 48 hours before the match of the number of supporters expected to travel.

Buses would also not be allowed to stop within ten miles of the venue either enroute to, or on departure from the event without prior agreement from a DFO.

Vehicle operators would also be expected to notify DFOs of offensive chanting which had taken place during the journey to the ground.

Flynn, MP for Aberdeen South, took to social media yesterday in reaction to the proposals, writing: “Unworkable, unmanageable, unenforceable. Get in the bin.

“The clubs these fans support can be a huge force for good and more folk attend matches in Scotland than anywhere else in Europe. Celebrate them, don’t punish them.”

Flynn’s post has since received over 2,300 likes and more than 130 comments from Scots left in agreement.

Steven Flynn’s Tweet criticising the proposals

One user said: “Why would UK Gov have any say over Scotland on this. I’m genuinely confused.”

Another replied: “Hear hear.”

A third commented: “Whether it’s workable or not is beside the point. What’s it actually for? What problem is it fixing? Was there research done on the impact to football adjacent businesses?”

Another wrote: “The attitude to football supporters comes through loud and clear in this. Disgraceful!”

A fifth added: “I used to think we were in danger of becoming a nanny state by stealth but now it’s absolutely blatant. What a disgrace.”

In addition to reaction from fans, the UK Government has faced cross-party criticism from Holyrood, with Conservative MSP Douglas Ross writing: “These ludicrous plans are completely disproportionate.

“The proposals make no sense for the Scottish game and should be scrapped immediately. I’ve made that clear to the UK government.”

SNP’s Maree Todd added: “ScotGov was not consulted prior to publication of the proposals. I will ensure that the vast majority of law-abiding fans are heard.”

SCOTS have been left shocked after Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie was subjected to vile abuse during an interview.

The 50-year-old was at his party’s campaign launch for the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election yesterday when he stopped to give an interview to BBC Scotland News.

However, Harvie – who is also the minister for Zero-Carbon Buildings, Active Travel and Tenant’s Rights – was duly interrupted by an anonymous passer-by who launched a slur his way.

Video shows Harvie in front of the camera, mid-interview with journalist David Wallace Lockhart, when a man, who remains off-screen for the entirety of the interaction, can be heard questioning the pair.

Scottish Greens leader Patrick Harvie during BBC News Scotland interview.
Harvie was being interviewed by David Wallace Lockhart of BBC Scotland News when the incident occurred.

The man asks an unintelligible question, to which David replies: “Scottish Greens.”

The man then promptly responds: “Vote Green? Vote blue, vote any colour except his colour.”

David and Harvie are left in awkward silence for a moment before the former breaks the tension, joking: “I think you’ve got your work cut out there, winning that vote.”

David attempts to push on with the interview as the man initially appears to back off, but the abuser quickly returns seconds later, calling Harvie – who is bisexual – a “deviant”.

Harvie then snaps back: “You’re a bigot,” as he stares the man down.

The man doubles down on his statement before apparently walking away, still rambling incoherently.

Following this interruption, Mr Harvie goes on to talk about how the presence of “toxic forces” in British politics have led to increased levels of homophobia and transphobia in general.

He calls on those who perpetuate the “culture war” against minorities to take responsibility for verbal abuse and violence committed against such groups.

One Scotsman shared the clip to social media yesterday with the caption: “Absolutely disgusting to see a bisexual politician abused on the streets of Scotland like this.

“All the progress we’ve made as LGBTQ+ people used as fodder for a hateful culture war.

“Solidarity with Patrick Harvie who has always stood up for LGBTQ+ people in good times and bad.”

The post has since received over 2,300 likes and more than 250 comments from users left shocked by the man’s seemingly random attack on Harvie.

One user commented: “Very sorry to see this happen. Pity the camera wasn’t turned onto the bigot. Credit to Patrick for maintaining composure.”

Another wrote: “We stand with you 100% @patrickharvie. So sad to continuously see this type of thing – sending love and solidarity.”

A third said: “So sorry that you experienced this, Patrick. You handled it with your usual courage and dignity. Solidarity.”

Another replied: “Well handled, absolutely shocking that this is still a thing in 2023, stoked by high profile individuals pushing gender critical anti-trans views, etc!”

In the wake of the incident, the Greens have released the following statement: “We can confirm our co-leader Patrick Harvie was subjected to sustained and homophobic verbal abuse while conducting a television interview with BBC News Scotland.

“This occurred during today’s launch of our party’s by-election campaign for Rutherglen and Hamilton West.

“While this worrying incident consisted of verbal abuse, the current wave of homophobia and transphobia has included far worse, borne out by recent crime statistics.

“It is truly shocking that in 2023 such a threat is once again being deliberately stirred up by politicians every bit as reactionary as those who created Section 28 back in the 1980s, or who backed the homophobic “Keep the Clause” campaign in the early days of devolution.

“Incidents of hatred against LGBTQ+ people have been growing steadily in recent years.

“Some of this comes as a direct result of the “culture war”, misinformation and hostility being manufactured by the UK Government and other politicians and media voices.

“They must take responsibility for the consequences of their toxic rhetoric which leads to regrettable incidents like the one witnessed today.

“Mr Harvie and the Scottish Greens are proud of our work in pushing through hate crime legislation over a decade ago, which means we now have the data to measure this threat against our community.

“The safety of all our MSPs, staff and volunteers is a priority for our party and we will be contacting Police Scotland to make them aware of today’s incident.”

LIBERAL Democrat leader Ed Davey has been mocked online for his snap of him celebrating the Lionesses World Cup success – drawing comparisons to a stock photo.

Following the England Women’s team’s 1-3 victory over hosts Australia to secure a place in the World Cup final yesterday, Davey took to social media to partake in the celebrations.

The 57-year-old shared a picture of himself surrounded by unknown people in a pub, seemingly excitedly watching the conclusion of the game.

However, the MP’s efforts to apparently seem down to earth have backfired, with his eerily perfect picture being compared to a generic image found on Google.

The photo shows the former Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change standing in an unknown pub surrounded by apparent punters and possibly family members.

Despite the two TV screens behind him, the politician and his pals appear to be watching an unseen screen behind the camera.

Davey can be seen grasping a pint in one hand and sports a smile comparable to a grimace as he enthusiastically clenches his fist, pumping in the air in celebration.

He is flanked by a young man and woman, whilst another man stands behind Davey, staring on at the screen – although only one of the three appear to have a drink.

The entire picture appears almost too perfect, with the lighting and poses almost faultless.

Davey posted the image to social media yesterday writing: “What an amazing result! So proud of the Lionesses and excited for Sunday morning.”

The snap received over 1,100 likes, but user Aiden James was quick to jump on the opportunity for a joke, sharing the post with the caption: “Absolutely unparalleled stock photo vibe here.”

Aiden’s comment has racked up over 27,000 likes, with dozens of replies from users left in stitches by his quip.

One user wrote: “There’s a “Man at pub with family” Google Images results vibe here.”

Another commented: “‘Can we have drinks too Ed?’ ‘No.'”

A third joked: “He looks like he’s threatening to chin the staff if they don’t switch over to the rugby.”

Another quipped: “‘Can someone pour out about one-fifth of Ed’s beer before the photo is taken?'”

A fifth added: “‘Yes, we’ve won a throw-in! Take the picture now’.”

Despite the awkward photograph, Ed Davey has called for a national bank holiday due to the recent success of the Lionesses.

He said yesterday: “The Lionesses have made history by reaching the final, they are an inspiration to athletes across the country already.

“Winning the World Cup would be a phenomenal achievement. It absolutely deserves to celebrated with a bank holiday.”

This was also suggested by Labour leader Keir Starmer as he posted: “It’s almost 60 years since England won the World Cup.

“I’m never complacent about anything…but there should be a celebratory bank holiday if the Lionesses bring it home.”

The Lionesses will face Spain on Sunday in the Women’s World Cup final for their chance to win back-to-back titles having won the European Championships only last year.

This is not the first time a politician has used football as a means seem more relatable.

Previous examples include former Prime Minister David Cameron mistakenly saying that he supports West Ham, despite claiming to be an Aston Villa supporter.

More recently, current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak – who claims to support Southampton – was asked last season what he would suggest to bring back form to The Saints.

His reply was “I’m going to be unpopular for saying it here, starting by beating [Manchester] United this weekend”, despite his struggling team actually facing Leicester City that week.

THE CEO of one of the UK’s largest energy suppliers is urging the government to give financial assistance to support poor households amid in-depth studies into fuel poverty.

Bill Bullen, CEO of smart PAYG specialist Utilita Energy, says the hardest up households will need at least £593 of additional government support to stay warm and keep the lights on this winter.

This is based on Utilita analysis of smart meter data from more than 51,000 financially vulnerable households.

The call for urgent intervention is one of seven demands being made by Bullen to help millions of vulnerable households facing a bleak winter ahead.

Mother With Son Trying To Keep Warm By Radiator At Home During Cost Of Living Energy Crisis
Households will need at least £593 additional government support to stay warm and keep the lights on this winter.

The study analysed self-rationing and self-disconnection behaviours of 51,205 financially vulnerable households over the last two winters – before and during the energy crisis.

It examined changes in energy consumption levels against the rising cost of energy to identify the exact financial shortfall causing households to go without the energy they need.

It has been revealed that households experiencing the worst fuel poverty will need at least an extra £593 to afford the energy they need to maintain a safe and healthy heat, based on an expected £1,850 price cap on 1 October.

The additional support required would rise to £797 if the price cap increased to £2,500 in a worst-case scenario.

Utilita also revealed fuel poverty in England and Wales is affecting more households than the government and charities claim.

Fuel poverty charity, National Energy Action, calculated that 6.6m households in England and Wales will be in fuel poverty from 1st July 2023 – almost double the 3.7m households the government reported as being in fuel poverty last year.

“The Government must not allow one in three households to agonise about the winter ahead, with no guarantee of any financial assistance.” Bullen said.

“Low-income households are less resilient than ever and are already self-rationing both energy and food for fear of what’s ahead.

“Our data shows last winter’s £400 Energy Bill Support credits cut self-disconnections for Smart PAYG households by half – this winter they need to be at least £593.

“Anything less for these households – and the Department for Work and Pensions knows who they are – will be negligent and will leave the tab to be picked up by the NHS.”

JUST 3% of veterans in Fife have received the ID cards promised to them by the UK Government to support them with access to crucial services.

Only 617 veteran’s ID cards have been distributed to the approximately 18,000 total veterans in the county.

Now, Labour’s General Election candidate for Dunfermline and West Fife, Graeme Downie, has launched a Veterans’ Voice campaign which aims to understand concerns from former service men and women.

In 2019, The UK Government promised to provide every veteran in the UK with a card, in order to provide fast access to health, housing and charity services.

Graeme Downie at Rosyth Naval Base.
Graeme Downie is the Scottish Labour candidate for Dunfermline and Fife West.

In December, Veterans’ Minister Johnny Mercer promised to roll out all remaining ID cards by this summer.

However, analysis conducted by the Labour Party also showed that at the current rate of delivery, it will take more than a century to give every veteran a card.

To keep his promise, Mr Mercer needs to deliver over 1.7 million in cards in the next three months, despite currently being far from that target.

Now, Mr. Downie has accused the UK Government of failing veterans.

Veterans’ Voice is Labour’s nationwide listening campaign to link up with veterans and their families and shape the party’s plans for the next general election.

To raise awareness about this issue and address concerns of local veterans, Mr. Downie has organised an event at the Royal British Legion in Dunfermline on 26 June from 1pm as part of Labour’s Veterans’ Voice campaign. All Veterans are invite to join.

Graeme Downie, Scottish Labour candidate for Dunfermline and West Fife, said: “It is crystal clear the Conservative UK Government is letting down veterans across Fife.”

“The veterans ID card is supposed to help our society keep its promise to those who serve by ensuring quick access to services like healthcare. But Conservative ministers have delivered just a fraction of the cards needed.”

“Our veterans don’t need empty promises, they need action.

“That’s why Labour has launched its Veterans’ Voice campaign to hear directly from former personnel and their families, and put their lived experiences at the heart of our future policy offer.”

“I am looking forward to discussing these issues and I am sure many others with local veterans at the event I have organised later this month.”

PROMINENT SCOTS lawyer Aamer Anwar has called out broadcaster ITV after a cringeworthy gaffe which saw him labelled as Scots Labour leader Anas Sarwar.

The broadcaster’s flagship News at Six programme had been airing a segment on Sarwar in Holyrood last night.

However, when the name tag appeared at the bottom of the screen it was claimed he was actually Aamer Anwar MSP.

Anwar, 55, was quick to hit out at ITV, sarcastically panning the channel for mixing him up as one of the “three Asian men in Scotland”, having previously been mistaken for First Minister Humza Yousaf.

The anti-racism campaigner shared a screenshot of the nametag to social media last night writing: “Some days I’m the First Minister but I see this evening that I’ve taken over Scottish Labour in ITV News.

“Only problem is I appear to have lost my good looks.

“Easy mistake, after all, there are only three Asian men in Scotland but I’m not a politician.”

Social media users were left quick to comment on the fact that the broadcaster had made such a shocking error.

One said: “I’m shocked that this still happens, PS – you’d make a great politician, I’d vote for you.”

Another added: “Aamer three jobs Anwar.”

A third replied: “Oh my days, if you didn’t laugh you’d greet.”

A fourth commented: “It’s good that you can laugh at this but seriously it is appalling that this basic mistake keeps being made.”

Another fumed: “It’s actually beyond belief that this still happens.”

Anwar has worked on several high profile legal cases in Scotland including representing the family of Sheku Bayoh.

However he revealed that the case which horrified him the most was actually the Cricket Scotland racism row featuring former players Majid Haq and Qasim Sheikh.

A SCOTS schoolgirl has dressed as a Ukrainian soldier along with her own tank for Halloween to show support during the Russian invasion.

Caoimhe Flynn donned a full camouflage army outfit, including body armour, a plastic gun and mini cardboard tank, to go to school in Glasgow on last Wednesday.

The eight-year-old’s mum, Siobhan Smith, custom-made the outfit to show solidarity to Ukraine and her local community who have welcomed several families from the war torn country this year.

Caoimhe also wanted to pay support to her stepdad who has been stationed out in Ukraine since March while working as a safety response specialist.

Speaking today, childhood studies student Siobhan, 28, said: “Our community has recently had a lot of Ukrainian families move into the area with some of the children attending the school.

“My partner has also been working in Ukraine since March and I feel that the war is more relevant to our family and community than some others. We wanted to show our support for the Ukrainian people.

“My daughter was really excited as she is aware of the ongoing situation in Ukraine and is very compassionate.

“The school loved it, they thought it was amazing. I always hand make costumes for Caoimhe every year so I think they were expecting something big again.

“The Ukrainian families at the school were amazed, they all asked to take some pictures and some of the kids had a shot of going in the tank.

“They were very thankful for giving them some time and for showing my support.”

“I am very glad that people are supportive of my idea and have been very positive about it as I worried it could have been taken the wrong way.”

Siobhan posted images of her daughter in her costume on Facebook last week, writing “Sergeant Caoimhe, reporting for duty! Slava Ukraini.”

Hundreds of social media users liked the images and left comments praising the youngster for showing her support.

One person said: “You done amazing this year hun, as we all know this the kiddies all loved her costume. You should be very proud of yourself.”

Another wrote: “Class act. ????? ??????? (Glory to Ukraine).”

A third commented: “Wow this is absolutely amazing. Well done.”

A fourth added: “This is really impressive. Well done.”

However, one viewer was not impressed by the outfit and branded it distasteful.

He said: “I’m gonna get absolutely destroyed for saying this, I just know it, but I will anyway. There’s showing support and there’s being distasteful. This to me feels like the latter.

“Thousands of Ukrainian’s are dying in the streets fighting, many have fled to the UK for refuge (rightly so).

“I don’t think it’s respectful to be making light of the horrors and rolling a tank down the road past places housing refugees.”

Siobhan responded: “Your opinion, if that is how you have perceived this. But let me just give you a bit of background.

“My partner is currently working in Ukraine and has been since March. So I am very aware of what is going on over there.

“Also, over 1,000 Ukrainians have moved into our community, with some of the children attending my daughter’s school.

“So the war may be more relevant to us as a family/community than some others.

“Upon attending the Halloween party at my daughter’s school, the Ukrainian families actually approached me afterwards to ask to take pictures as they were amazed by it.

“Their children also had a shot of playing inside it, which they loved.

“They were very thankful that I took time to speak to them and kept thanking me for showing my support. So from refugees themselves, they have been very accepting and had no problems with it.”

LIZ Truss has been mocked for her recent announcement regarding fracking, through a cheeky edit on Google Maps.

The Cuadrilla Resources fracking site, situated in the countryside just outside of Blackpool, Lancashire, has been edited to be called the “Liz Truss Career Memorial”, following backlash on the Prime Minister’s plans to allow fracking to take place in the area.

A tweet with a screenshot of the area was posted on Wednesday night, reading: “Someone’s renamed the fracking site near Blackpool. You absolute legend.”

Tweet discovering the edit on Google Maps. Credit: Twitter/@marybephomet

The screenshot shows the large, drab, concreted area in the countryside from above, complete with a blue marker featuring the silhouette of a castle, tagged as the “Liz Truss Career Memorial”.

The tweet has received over 12,000 likes, 2,000 retweets and dozens of comments.

One comment joked: “Over five hours drive for me. Not sure whether she will still have a career when I get there.”

Another user added: “Still there. Amazing! And what reviews!”

A third reply read: “This has made my day today, whoever did this, I salute you.”

Casper Horton-Kitchlew is the man behind the name-change at the location.

Speaking today, the 30-year-old said: “There wasn’t a plan to be honest! There was that radio interview where Truss said she’d never been to that fracking site and I thought – well neither have I so had a look on Google Maps.

Casper (pictured) made a subtle change on Google.

“The big lump of concrete looked so out of place in the countryside, I just thought ‘Wow. Why would someone push for this so close to towns and villages?’

“We know we don’t need fracking and that there are renewable energy sources -pushing for it is career suicide, hence the career memorial.

“Over the last two years I’ve met hundreds of people who are passionate about protecting the UK’s environment and getting us off oil and gas.

“To have this Government come in and take massive steps backwards has been a big shock – and I don’t think the public will stand for it.

“It’s been pretty depressing to watch, but it can’t last.

“This whole Government has read the room wrong. Not understanding that people in the UK really care about the climate and environment will be the end of Liz Truss’ career.”

The altered name has since been removed by Google, but online users still managed to leave a collection of hilarious reviews in the time it was visible.

One review read: “Lots of space to practice U-turns in your car.”

Another review said: “Blackpool’s answer to Dismaland; organised through the festival of Brekzhit & Moofast, with the theme of ‘Where half-lives go to decay’. Featuring Bojo’s kool retreats.”

Casper, from Peckham, London, admitted that he had forgotten about even making the name change until he received an email from Google, flagging the change up.

Email that Casper received from Google flagging his edit.

He said: “Honestly I put it up about two weeks ago and forgot about it until last night.

“I had an email from Google saying its been flagged for suspicious activity and I spent a good five minutes laughing at the reviews and comments.

“Quite funny really. The only reviews I left before this were for pubs!”

The Cuadrilla Resources site in Lancashire had previously caused a 2.9 magnitude earth tremor in August 2019.

Any work on the site was prohibited by the Government the same year, after concerns were raised over the tremors.

However, this ban has since been reversed by Liz Truss, due to the recent publication of a scientific review into Hydro-fracturing practice by the British Geological Survey (BGS).

This review concluded that there is still a limited amount of knowledge about the effects of fracking.

As such, the controversial practice is seen as a viable solution by the Prime Minister in the midst of the ongoing energy crisis.

Food Train Chief Executive Michelle Carruthers was among the experts who signed a letter to Public Health Minister Maree Todd calling for an independent food commission to be set up under the Good Food Nation Bill.

Michelle Carruthers, chief executive of Food Train along with other experts are urging MSPs to take action and help stop Scots from going hungry.

Food Train warned that MSPs cannot miss the opportunity to put the right to food at the heart of the new policy working its way through the Scottish parliament.

The charity, a member of the Scottish Food Coalition, is currently carrying out research into the impact of the cost of living crisis on older people.

A previous study suggested that as many as 30% of over-65s are already at risk of becoming malnourished.

Ms Carruthers is calling on politicians of all parties to ensure the establishment of the commission is added to the Bill as it is considered in Parliament in June.

She said: “We need action – and now. The cost-of-living crisis is deepening the under-recognised problem of worrying numbers of older people who struggle to eat properly.

“Many are at risk of becoming seriously ill, adding to the significant strains on our NHS and social care system.

“We have older people telling us that they are eating less, or having fewer warm meals, so they can pay rising bills.

“That’s scandalous, making what’s already an alarming problem even worse.

“The creation of an independent food commission could go a long way to tackling problems around food security and some of the injustices in our social care system.

“MSPs must seize the opportunity they have now to ensure this happens. It’s no exaggeration to say that lives depend upon it.”

Calls to create a commission were considered during committee discussions at Stage Two of the Good Food Nation Bill in the Scottish Parliament.

These were supported by Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat MSPs. Further consideration is expected during the final debate in the Bill process, due to take place later in June.

Ms Carruthers added: “Food should glue all policy together. Successive administrations at Holyrood have struggled with this.

“Food sustains, nourishes and connects us. That’s why we are supporting the call for an independent food commission.”

Food Train works to tackle and raise awareness about malnutrition among older people throughout Scotland through its home shopping, meal sharing, befriending and other support services.

Its volunteers help people to live eat well in their homes, ensuring they can enjoy good food and company.

SCOTTISH Universities have been condemned for accepting millions in funding for Confucius institutes from ‘corrupt and totalitarian’ Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

A recent freedom of information request by the Spectator revealed that Edinburgh and Strathclyde Universities accepted £11m in funding between them from Hanban.

Hanban is an organisation linked to the Chinese Ministry of Education that oversees and funds Confucius institutes, it’s council consists of members drawn from various CCP ministries.

Edinburgh University accepted £6m in funding while Strathclyde accepted £5.6m between 2006 and 2021 in a move that Free Tibet has condemned.

Free Tibet claims China is only interested in feeding propaganda and suppressing truth.

The FOI by the spectator revealed that £26m had been accepted by universities across the UK from Hanban with Edinburgh and Strathclyde accepting the most.

The Confucius Institute at Strathclyde recently moved to the refurbished Ramshorn church.

Hanban has since changed its name to the Chinese International Education Foundation.

Confucius institutes have been heavily criticised in the press since the project was launched in 2004 for creating undue CCP influence in the universities they are established in.

The Edinburgh Confucius institute was vandalised last year with graffiti reading “CCPHQ” appearing on its sign.

Li Changchun, former head of propaganda for the Chinese Communist Party has been widely quoted as saying Confucius Institutes are “an important part of China’s overseas propaganda set-up.”

While a report by the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission published in 2019 stated: “The Conservative Party Human Rights Commission believes that the question of the presence of Confucius Institutes in British universities requires immediate and urgent attention.

“We therefore call on Her Majesty’s Government to consider this report and respond to the concerns outlined.”

A 2019 article in the Guardian stated, “Universities are not adequately responding to the growing risk of China and other “autocracies” influencing academic freedom in the UK, the foreign affairs select committee has said.”

While a BBC article in the same year stated, “In recent weeks, a flurry of universities around the world have shut down programmes operated by the institute.

“In Australia, an investigation is even under way into whether agreements between universities and the institute have broken anti-foreign interference laws.”

The University of Leeds and Aberdeen have both ceased to accept funding from Hanban and the Ministry of Education for their institutes following the criticisms.

They now instead are finding funding from their respective partner universities in China.

But regardless of the numerous criticism’s Strathclyde and Edinburgh Universities continued to accept the funding up until 2020.

John Jones, Campaigns and Research Manager at Free Tibet said: “For decades the Chinese government has been working to eradicate Tibetan culture from its schools and replace it with propaganda.

“It has even resorted to arresting teachers and destroying schools in order to get its way.

“Xi Jinping and his government have no interest in furthering the education of students in Scotland, they simply want to feed them propaganda and suppress the truth about their brutal oppression.

“There is clear benefit for students learning the Chinese language and about China’s culture, but no university that believes in academic freedom can even consider accepting money from such a corrupt and totalitarian source.”

A spokesperson for the University of Edinburgh said: “Edinburgh’s Confucius Institute and the University of Edinburgh conducts open and critical debate about China alongside efforts to promote cultural outreach, knowledge exchange and dialogue.

“The University is committed to academic freedom and academic debate, and this is unaffected by its relationship with the Confucius Institute.

“All University partnerships undergo a rigorous due diligence assessment and are reviewed on an ongoing basis.

“The Institute has contributed to significant discussion of matters relating to contemporary China.”

While Strathclyde university commented: “Between 2012 and 2020, CISS received £4.4 million funding from Hanban, the governing body of China’s Confucius Institutes, which are partnerships established to promote the teaching of Chinese language and culture.

“The funding was used for Confucius Classroom hub schools around Scotland and for local authorities to recruit GTCS-registered teachers of Mandarin.

“In addition, £1.2 million Hanban funding to Strathclyde covered part of the cost of new office facilities for the Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools, after it was awarded Model Confucius Institute status in 2017.”

The Chinese Government has been contacted for comment through their London Embassy but has not replied as of yet.
